Life of Blessed Adolph Kolping

The Father of Journeymen & Vocational Education

Blessed Adolph Kolping (December 8, 1813 – December 4, 1865) was born in Kerpen, Germany. Growing up in a poor shepherd family, he trained as a shoemaker apprentice before answering God's call to the priesthood at age 31. Out of his deep concern for young itinerant artisans exploited during the Industrial Revolution, Father Kolping founded the first Journeymen's Association (Gesellenverein) in Cologne in 1849—the precursor to today's International Kolping Society.

  • 1813: Born in Kerpen, Germany to a humble shepherd family.
  • 1845: Ordained as a Catholic Priest in Cologne Cathedral.
  • 1849: Founded first Journeymen Association for young artisans.
  • 1991: Beatified by Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square.
  • 1990: Kolping Movement officially launched in Kenya.
